Old and new students at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg brought in the new school year with an event called the Big Bang, where students gather together to meet new people and catch up with old friends.
The event included live music, a moon-bounce, and free food for the students.
Sophomore Biology major Joseph Daugherty, from the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, earned the Elliot Scholar Award as a result of having the highest GPA in the sophomore class.
The award is a direct result of Elliot Company's Front-Nine sponsorship of the 2009 Pitt-Greensburg Golf Outing, held annually at the Greensburg Country Club.
The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg is holding its annual Student Activities Fair to gather both new and returning students together on September 7, 2010 from 11:00am to 3:00pm on Chambers Lawn.
The Student Activities Fair gives students a chance to get involved on campus in extracurricular activities, along with bettering their knowledge about campus life and community.
On Monday, September 6th, student musicians will gather to share their talents at the weekly Open Mic Night,which will take place in the Coffee House located in Village Hall from 9:00pm to 11:00pm.
The event is coordinated and run by junior Cody Kraski and sophomore Claire Secen who encourage students of all years to perform and/or listen to their peers in an informal, relaxed atmosphere.
Pitt-Greensburg Students Share Their Musical Talent
This fall semester, at The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, the coffeehouse in the academic villages, is holding open mic nights, at 9pm, for Pitt students, and others, to show off their musical talent.
This event began Aug 30th and after a plethora of amazing singers and guitar players, the closing act took the stage, a local rock band, The Spiffiez, who blew our minds with acoustic versions of their music.
The Pittsburgh Arts welcomes smooth sounds of jazz and the rhythmic rhymes of poetry at the 2010 Jazz Poetry Concert this Saturday, September 11th from 4:45 to 11 p.m. at Atria’s in PNC Park and Sampsonia Street, North Side.
The concert kicks off with Oliver Lake and his band entitled The Oliver Lake Big Band. The night will include him along with 17 skilled musicians, and poems read by Khet Mar and Yusef Komunyakaa. Dinner and a meet and greet with the poets at Atria's is also on the agenda for the night. Limited space is available. If interested, sign up at www.pittarts.org.
A Photograph says a Thousand Words From Spetember 7th through October 14th, the Millstein Library will host photographer and author Charles Brodskey’s traveling exhibit, I Thought I Could Fly. These 20 photographs that make up Brodskey’s exhibit are partnered with personal stories from individuals who’s lives have been affected in some way by mental illness. The purpose of this exhibit is to clarify the often untrue facts surrounding those who suffer from mental disease.
The annual JDRF Walk benefiting finding a cure for diabetes will be held on Saturday, September 11th, 2010. The walk will begin at 10, with registration beginning at 8:30 on the grassy area in front of Chambers Hall.
This is a great cause and every participant is important in helping find a cure for this horrible disease.

Pittsburgh folk and indie artists Brad Yoder and Jason Rafalak are performing a free concert, Wednesday September 8th at 8pm in the Coffee House.
Yoder has built a strong following in Pittsburgh, being voted “Best Solo/Acoustic Artist” four times since 2003 by the Pittsburgh City Paper, and he continues to expand his audience by opening for international acts such as Tegan and Sara and having songs featured on CBS’ “Numb3rs” and NPR’s “Car Talk.”
Animals for Action in Latrobe, which is part of the Humane Society, offers new volunteer orientation every 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month at 1:00 p.m for UPG students or anyone else looking to help around the community.
This “no kill” shelter relies largely on volunteer efforts, so students interested in helping forgotten animals can contact Animals for Action.

The Annual Pennsylvania Arts and Crafts Festival returned to the Westmoreland County Fairgrounds this Labor Day weekend to celebrate its 17th anniversary.
The festival runs from Friday, September 3rd to Monday, September 6th, and it is not only Pennsylvania's highest rated craft show, but one of the top 20 craft shows in America.
Four ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) cadets, three men and one woman, were commissioned as second lieutenants during a ceremony held on August 16th at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg campus.
Each of the four candidates were administered an Oath of Office by Lieutenant Colonel Joseph P. Alessi, PhD, a professor of Military Science, and are now in the process of transitioning into their first duty assignments with the National Guard and the U.S. Army.

Pitt-Greensburg's largest ROTC class was commissioned on August 16 as four people, three men and one woman, were named Second Lieutenent.

Music, Poets, and Eats on the River
